Can I train in Year R?

Our course is age 5-11 so we do not host placements in Year R. However, throughout the year, there is opportunity to spend time in EYFS and training days will include training on this. Many of our students have gone on to teach in Reception.

What are the course dates?

Training commences on the first week in September and ends at the end of June. The School Led PGCE calendar is based around the school calendar therefore trainees will have the school holidays and typically follow the Hampshire School dates.

What qualifications will this course give me?

Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Level 7- on completion of assignments.

QTS (Qualified Teacher Status)- from passing teaching practices.

What will I do on school placement?

Teaching time increases gradually throughout the year with protected time in school allocated for planning, reflecting, observing and University assignments. Initially, your teaching time will be 30% and by the end of the course you will be teaching 80% of your days in school.

You will be supported by a trained mentor in school who will carry out weekly reviews and observations to track your progress. You will build a supportive relationship, receiving guidance, feedback and advice to help you grow and succeed.

What happens at interview?

You will take part in an interview with two representatives from the Training School. Following this, you will discuss a pre-prepared reading task and complete both a written task and a maths test. The full interview process typically lasts around two hours.

What are we looking for in candidates?

We have large group of students from many different walks of life, with a good balance between students coming straight from degrees and those changing careers. We truly value the experience that you, as an individual, can bring to teaching and want to hear about this at interview.

Although not essential, many students feel better prepared for the course when they have gained some classroom experience. If you would like to build this experience after securing a placement, we can support you in arranging suitable opportunities.
